Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams said late last week that the Tennessee Titans are one of three teams with which he has upcoming visits.
Williams made the statement on NFL Network, per Pro Football Talk, adding that the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns had also scheduled him for visits.
The Titans hold picks No. 5 and 18 in the first round of this year’s draft, and it is no secret that they need help at wide receiver – if for no other reason than the lack of numbers at the position.
But Tennessee also is looking to upgrade and infuse the position with more young talent. The Titans got a strong season from free agent pickup Rishard Matthews last year, as he caught 65 passes for 945 yards and nine touchdowns last year. Opposite him, rookie Tajae Sharpe had 41 receptions for 522 yards and two scores.
Tennessee added kick returner Eric Weems from the Atlanta Falcons. Weems could be used as a fourth or fifth receiver in the offense. Beyond that, they have veteran Harry Douglas and Tre McBride, who was mostly inactive after joining the 53-man roster midway through the season.
The Titans allowed Kendall Wright to walk away in free agency to the Chicago Bears after he had a disappointing 2016 season. Marc Mariani is also a free agent and won’t return after the signing of Weems.
Williams, who is a big target at 6-4, caught 98 passes for 1,391 yards and 11 touchdowns last season for the national champion Clemson Tigers. Williams’ 40 time was in the 4.5 range and he has the leaping ability to win at the point of attack.
He is regarded as one of the top receivers in this draft along with Corey Davis and John Ross, all of whom are different types of wideouts.
The Titans, since Jon Robinson took over as general manager and Mike Mularkey became head coach, have adopted a new philosophy in evaluating wide receivers, putting an emphasis on precise route-running and the ability to catch the football over pure measureables such as size and speed.
Williams also missed a good portion of the 2015 season with a neck injury that he came back from last year.
