Kevin Dodd has been elusive this off-season, having stayed away from the Tennessee Titans voluntary OTAs this off-season.
Dodd was present and accounted for at Tuesday’s mini-camp, but was still elusive – at least when it came to discussing his absence from prior practices.
Once practice ended, and reporters were allowed to speak to players as they exited the field, Dodd did a side run, going into the training room still in full gear rather than past reporters who were waiting to speak with him.
Coach Mike Vrabel was fairly succinct when the topic of Dodd came up. Vrabel defended Dodd when one reporter asked about his dodging the media and also said he did not speak with the former second-round pick regarding his absence.
“Didn’t even ask him, didn’t even talk to him. Just asked him to do what we’ve asked everybody else to do, to come in, to be attentive, to be coachable, to give great effort and to know what to do,” Vrabel said. “From first glance it looked like he did that. We’ll take a look at the film, and then we’ll go from there.”
From what could be seen of Dodd, it appears that he has added some bulk to his frame, most likely to allow him to spend time as a five-technique end, something the Titans acknowledged earlier in the off-season that Dodd would do.
The other big question for Dodd – which Vrabel was left to address – is how far behind he is regarding his knowledge of the installation of Dean Pees’ defense.
“I think the biggest thing would be his conditioning. If he knows what to do, if he stayed up on the installation, then no,” Vrabel said. “Again, I can’t really tell you from first glance if there were mental errors or if he lined up wrong, or that. But again, he was here, he was working, and it was good to have him back.”
With Taylor Lewan holding out from mandatory mini-camp, he was the only player unaccounted for on Tuesday. Rishard Matthews, Jack Conklin, Phillip Supernaw and Michael Campanaro, who has not practiced since limping off the field two weeks ago, did not practice on Tuesday.
Receiver Corey Davis was limited on Tuesday.
