Titans add veteran QB Matt Cassel on 1-year deal

The Tennessee Titans added veteran quarterback Matt Cassel on a one-year deal on Wednesday, per a league source.

Cassel, a journeyman quarterback who split last season between the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys, joins starter Marcus Mariota and backups Zach Mettenberger and Alex Tanney on the roster.

Cassel played in eight games for the Cowboys last season, taking over for injured starter Tony Romo and backup Brandon Weeden, completed 119 of 204 passes for 1,276 yards with five touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He appeared in just one game for the Bills last season and did not have any pass attempts.

Cassel’s arrival calls into question the future of Mettenberger, though per a league source, the Titans are not currently attempting to move the former LSU standout.

Cassel came into the NFL in 2005 as a seventh-round draft choice of the New England Patriots after having backed up former Heisman Trophy-winning QB Matt Leinart at Southern Cal. Cassel stepped in for an injured Tom Brady in 2008, leading New England to an 11-5 record.

The Patriots then traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs where he spent four seasons. He later was with the Minnesota Vikings for two years before signing with the Bills last year.

Cassel has 101 career touchdown passes and 77 interceptions, while completing 58.9 percent of his passes over his career. Cassel offers the Titans an experienced backup quarterback who has been a starter and played on playoff teams, something a young Titans team has been short on in terms of experience in recent years.

Mettenberger, a sixth-round draft choice of the Titans in 2014, was the primary backup to Mariota last season in Mariota’s first year. Mettenberger started six games as a rookie for Tennessee and made four more starts in 2015 in place of an injured Mariota, but is 0-10 all-time as a starting quarterback. He was replaced by Tanney in the Titans’ season finale at Indianapolis after the Tennessee offense struggled against the Colts. Tanney was re-signed by the Titans to their active roster last year after Mariota was lost to a knee injury.
