Barring a miracle collapse, the Tennessee Titans already had the game pretty much in hand.
Running back Derrick Henry admits he was just trying to get one more first down to kill the last of the Texans’ hopes by running out the clock.
Instead, he drove a stake through the heart of the Texans defense with a 75-yard run around left end, outracing the Houston secondary to the end zone to turn a four-point lead into an 11-point victory Sunday.
“I’m just trying to finish, we needed a first down for us to seal the game. I broke and all I saw was grass, so I just kept going,” said Henry, who finished with 109 yards rushing, thanks to the long TD run.
Actually, it was left tackle Taylor Lewan who suggested the toss sweep be used after the Titans had gone between the tackles on the first plays of the drive. It paid off big time.
“Actually, Taylor after the first play of that drive thought that maybe we had an opportunity to run that play” Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota said. “I thought it was smart of him to mention it to Coach (Mike) Mularkey and again, they just executed the play and Derrick (Henry) did it all.”
The play was similar to what Baltimore had done to the Texans on Monday night, a play Henry had seen watching the game on TV.
“That’s crazy, because Baltimore ran that (in the) game on Monday night and I watched that play live,” Henry said. “We ran the same play twice, they were all in the box. Even Taylor Lewan, he was calling, like, ‘We’ve got to run that play,’ and they called it the next play and it was wide open. Glad we got the score.”
Cornerback Logan Ryan is in the concussion protocol after leaving the game in the second half.
Also, defensive end Daquan Jones will have his right biceps examined after leaving the game. Jones had 1.5 sacks before exiting, giving him 3.5 in the past two games.
