Marcus Mariota shows improvement in throwing arm

Marcus Mariota threw the ball “the best he’s thrown the ball since all this occurred against Miami,” Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur said after Thursday’s practice.
That said, Mariota was still listed as limited again on the team’s injury report and still could be out of the lineup for a second straight game this Sunday in Jacksonville.
“Based on everything and the knowledge that we have and the information that we have from the different specialists, that nerve takes some time, and hopefully it heals up quicker rather than later,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Thursday.
Asked about Mariota’s status, Vrabel said his quarterback took a little more than half the reps in Thursday’s practice.
“I would say that Marcus is actually better. He threw the ball better today. So that’s a positive. It’s moving in the right direction,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said.
One of the things that LaFleur is cognizant of with Mariota is that he does not want the injury to affect his throwing mechanics, something that was a big point of emphasis in the off-season and training camp to have Mariota throw from a wider base.
“The biggest thing you’re dealing with when a guy is going through something with his arm, is you don’t want the mechanics to change, because he’s worked so hard all off-season on his footwork, his throwing mechanics,” LaFleur said. “Sometimes when you get something that’s a little bit off the reservation a little bit, they change. So for us, we just want to make sure he’s staying sharp with his technique and fundamentals.”
Taylor Lewan was to see the independent physician to gain final clearance from the concussion protocol on Thursday afternoon. Lewan, who was limited Wednesday, did full work on Thursday’s practice.
Jack Conklin remains limited in his return from left knee surgery, but did a bit more Thursday, according to Vrabel.
Dennis Kelly remains out of practice and out of the facility with a virus, but could return to the building on Friday.
Running back David Fluellen was out again with a groin injury.
Derrick Henry was limited with a back injury, while linebacker Kamalei Correa, who has two sacks in the first two games, was added to the injury report after not practicing with a back injury. Luke Stocker, limited on Wednesday with a calf injury, was a full participant Thursday.
