Mariota hopes to stay healthier by bulking up

As the Tennessee Titans welcomed back players for the beginning of the off-season program, all eyes were on quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Mariota, entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, is coming off a year where he was beset by an elbow injury and nerve damage in his throwing arm, among a whole list of injuries from 2018.
Mariota started 13 games and played in one in relief last season while battling through the nerve issue that began in week one. He missed the Titans’ regular season finale against Indianapolis due to risks regarding the injury and spent the off-season adding a few pounds to his frame in an attempt to stay healthier in 2019.
“What it comes out to is just being able to absorb the hits, being able to be healthy for a full year. Those things haven’t really happened yet and I’m doing my best to get on the front of it and allow myself the opportunity to play all 16 games,” Mariota said.
In adding weight, Mariota said he stuck to a strict diet and training regimen in order to not feel sluggish with more pounds.
“More just good weight, not bad weight, trying to feel good in a sense that I can carry it well. You don’t want sloppy weight where you feel heavy, you feel sluggish. I’m just making sure the weight is good and healthy,” he said.
As for where his health is right now, Mariota said he is pretty much full go, but will be careful in the early stages of the off-season work.
“I’m feeling better. I don’t know the exact number, but I’m feeling pretty close to being fully healthy. As every single day goes on, we have a plan to get more and more healthy. I think this athletic training staff has gone a good job and I look forward to just continuing to work with them,” he said. “I’m in the middle of everything with everybody. (There are) not necessarily limitations, but just trying to be smart. If there’s something that is lingering or maybe something that doesn’t feel right, just being able to communicate with everybody.”
