Titans hosting Iowa safety Amani Hooker

The Tennessee Titans are hosting Iowa safety Amani Hooker today for a visit as one of their 30 pre-draft visits to St. Thomas Sports Park, a league source tells TitanInsider.com.

Hooker, who won’t turn 21 until June, was the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year for the Hawkeyes. He had 65 total tackles in his junior season at Iowa. He had four interceptions and seven passes defensed last season.

Hooker decided to declare for the 2019 draft and ran a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He also had a 37-inch vertical jump and ran a 6.81 in the three-cone drill.

The Titans are set in the starting lineup at safety, having re-signed veteran Kenny Vaccaro to a new contract in the off-season and with Kevin Byard locked in at free safety. However, depth is a major concern for Tennessee, which has Dane Cruikshank, a rookie last season, as the only current backup.

Backups and special team safeties Brynden Trawick and Kendrick Lewis are both free agents, and thus far the Titans have not shown much interest in bringing them back to the fold.

Hooker has the type of versatility that the Titans covet, in that he started at strong safety and often shifted into a linebacker role in the Hawkeyes’ dime package.

Hooker was also slated to be the Hawkeyes’ punt returner for his senior season, had he decided to return to the team. The Titans had return issues this past season, as primary punt returner Adoree’ Jackson looked indecisive at times in the role. The Titans also would probably like to take that chore off Jackson’s plate if they can find a suitable replacement, as Jackson is also a starting cornerback.

Cameron Batson also got a look at the return role last season, but he struggled in that role last season as a rookie.

In several mock drafts, Hooker projects to be a third to fourth-round choice.
