Titans sign QB Austin Davis; put Kevin Pamphile on IR

The signing of quarterback Austin Davis off the street on Tuesday means that backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who is in the concussion protocol, won’t be available at least this week, and perhaps longer.
The hit Gabbert took from the Jaguars’ Malik Jackson was brutal, and the Titans won’t take any chances with such injuries, much in the same way they held out Taylor Lewan against Houston after he sustained a concussion in the opener in Miami.
It also means that the option of starting Gabbert while Marcus Mariota tries to heal from the numbness in his hand, is no longer on the table. Mariota will start Sunday and beyond, and Davis is only around to play in case of catastrophe.
The Titans also waived rookie Logan Woodside from the practice squad in the process of their quarterback shuffle on Tuesday.
Perhaps the most unusual occurrence from the transactions, though, was the placing of tackle Kevin Pamphile on injured reserve. That move made room for Davis on the 53-man roster.
It is also signal that right tackle Jack Conklin (knee) and his primary backup Dennis Kelly (illness) are getting closer to returning to action.
Pamphile started and went the entire way on Sunday, playing right tackle, so his trip to the IR comes as a complete surprise.
In other practice squad moves, the Titans also let go of defensive lineman Deon Simon, while adding receiver Kalif Raymond and guard Ian Silberman.
