Monday’s practice for the Tennessee Titans wasn’t the sharpest of days in camp.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the offense seemed to struggle to find a rhythm in the morning session, which came after three days away from St. Thomas Sports Park. The Titans practiced at Centennial High School on Friday night, then followed that with a session at Nissan Stadium on Saturday before getting a day off Sunday.
Mariota’s throws were high on a couple of occasions, and there were times his receivers did not come down with catchable passes either.
At one point in practice, following a false start, Coach Mike Vrabel stopped practice, gathered the entire team up and reiterated to them to maintain focus better.
“I mean I think you’re concerned. We can’t really repeat too many periods. If you repeat a period, then we’re probably going to need to take one off at the end,” Vrabel said. “You’re robbing Peter to pay Paul because you can only get so many reps in a day, and we’ve got to make sure that we’re taking care of these guys. Obviously, we’ve got to get the work in. If we’ve got to get the period repeated, then we’ve got to get it repeated. Unfortunately, now we’re going to have to come back and find a way to make up what we missed.”
Play of the day: Cornerback Logan Ryan caught a tipped ball intended for Delanie Walker for an interception during team drills, providing a nice highlight on a day where the Titans defense overshadowed the offense in terms of execution against each other. Newcomer Kenny Vaccaro nearly had another interception for the defense, diving for a ball that was off the mark, but dropping it as he hit the ground.
First-team reps: Speaking of Vaccaro, the Titans wasted no time in putting him with the first team as he got reps with both the first and second units in Monday’s practice. There appears to be little doubt that Vaccaro will be starting alongside Kevin Byard sooner rather than later, perhaps even by Thursday night’s preseason opener after being signed off the street Saturday morning.
When Vaccaro was not running with the first group, rookie Dane Cruikshank ran with the starters.
Out of drills: Corey Davis was absent, though Vrabel said at the end of his media session that he “will be fine.” Davis left the practice field a bit early on Saturday at Nissan Stadium, and the Titans have already given him one day off in camp thus far to keep him fresh and protected.
Others out of action on Monday included safety Demontre Hurst, lineman Kevin Pamphile, linebacker Brian Orakpo, linebacker Rashaan Evans and linebacker Sharif Finch.
Injuries: Linebacker Nate Palmer was carted off the field after he was unable to put weight on his left leg following a rep on the field. Also, wide receiver Deontay Burnett had his left knee examined by trainers after a play late in practice, but appeared to be all right.
Long shot of the day: Tight end Tim Semisch has been part of a group of backup tight ends that have dropped passes at times in camp. But in red zone work Monday, he went up and made a nice grab, taking it away from a defender.
