Titans training camp notebook: Day 8

The Tennessee Titans took their training camp on the road, heading to Centennial High School in Franklin for Friday Night Lights session with an announced crowd of approximately 7,500 fans in attendance.

The Titans worked in a scrimmage type situation with the first team offense operating most of the night against the first team defense, and the second and third teamers mixing in to go against each other as well.

Marcus Mariota and the first team offense looked sharp early, as he hit Taywan Taylor for a couple of nice gains before scoring on a bootleg play from the 2-yard line.

After that, the first-team defense – missing some key elements, at linebacker an in the secondary due to injuries and planned days off – did a better job of keeping the offense in check.

After practice, players signed autographs for the fans in attendance.

Play of the day: Tight end Anthony Firskser made a nice sliding grab as he was going out of bounds on a nicely thrown ball by third-string quarterback Luke Falk. Falk, a sixth-round pick from Washington State, had probably his best showing of camp in splitting the second group reps with veteran Blaine Gabbert.

Falk has struggled at times in camp, but looked poised Friday night and was commended by Coach Mike Vrabel for his command of the huddle as well as his work on the field in the scrimmage.

Long shot of the day: Akrum Wadley, an undrafted running back from Iowa who is trying to hook on as a reserve running back, looked particularly good in one series where he received the bulk of the carries working with the second group. Wadley is in a battle with David Fluellen and Daryn Dawkins for a spot behind Derrick Henry and Dion Lewis.

Roster moves: The Titans made some roster moves on Friday, but it was not the one anticipated by signing a veteran safety to replace Johnathan Cyprien, who suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday.

Cyrpien was placed on injured reserve, but the Titans signed tackle Laurence Gibson in that roster spot. Tennessee also activated tight end Phillip Supernaw from the physically unable to perform list. The Titans also waived/injured defensive lineman Connor Flagel.

The Titans worked out several safeties, but apparently Eric Reid’s arrival was delayed until today, according to a report.

Injuries: Several players were out due to injury, many of them on defense. Linebackers Rashaan Evans, Brian Orakpo, Sharif Finch continue to be out with injuries. They were joined by Jayon Brown and Derrick Morgan, who was given a day off.

Michael Campanaro was also out of action Friday night, opening up the chance for Deontay Burnett to get additional reps in the slot with the twos. Nick Williams got reps in the slot with the first group.
